What to Pack in Your Diaper Bag

When Oliver was a baby I’d pack up our whole house and bring it with us, even if we just going on a Target run. Our first vacation away from home was just south to San Diego for two nights and the valet at the hotel commented on how much stuff I had brought. I used to have the mindset that I could never over pack—better to be safe than sorry! Fast forward almost four years later: I’ve forgotten on numerous occasions to throw some baby formula in the bag for Piper…

I’ve put together a list of the items I always carry in our diaper bag (when I remember to restock it!). Now some items won’t apply to every family; for reference I have a seven month old daughter and a three and a half year old son who is still in diapers and has a very selective diet (hashtag Lord give me strength).

Let’s start with the foundation: the diaper bag. Through the years I’ve had four different bags:

timi & leslie Dawn 7-Piece Diaper Bag—I bought this one before Oliver was even born. I think I used it once (side note: I have it for sale on my LetGo account…)

Ju-Ju-Be Super Be (similar)—This one I had the longest and I LOVED it! Spacious, had a long strap, easy to see inside, perfect. I bought a diaper bag organizer for real cheap on Amazon and it made my life a lot similar. Not even kidding. I also purchased stroller hooks and this diaper bag had loops on either end that hooked on to the carabiners. Here’s an image of the bag on the back of our stroller and one where you can see the hooks (another side note: I also have it for sale on my LetGo account…).

Marc by Marc Jacobs ‘Pretty Nylon Eliz-A-Baby’ Diaper Bag (similar)—Before Piper was born I knew I wanted to buy a new bag (I had the Ju-Ju-Be one for over three years). I had seen this bag before, but it was either sold out or discontinued. It’s pretty much the same as the Ju-Ju-Be, but it’s a Marc Jacobs. And I’m pretentious. So I found one on eBay 🙂

Skip Hop Forma Pack and Go Diaper Backpack—This is my current diaper bag and I love it! We originally bought it when we took Oliver to Disneyland last November because we (mistakenly) thought we didn’t need to take a stroller and neither of us wanted to carry the Marc Jacobs bag. It has a long strap but wearing it all day across your shoulder can really take a toll. This backpack has built in stroller straps and I really like the two insulated side bottle pockets because I can put Oliver’s sippy cup on one side and Piper’s bottle on the other for convenience.

This backpack offers the convenience of hands-free parenting on the go. The spacious interior has room to tote everything from snacks to spare outfits and the extra wide opening makes it easy to find essentials in a pinch. The front compartment includes 2 multi-purpose packing cubes and allows for extra storage. Everything stays in reach with elasticized interior pockets and insulated side bottle pockets. The changing pad pocket performs double-duty, acting as a laptop holder when traveling. With the forma backpack, function meets fashion to take you from birth to toddlerhood and beyond in style. Features: front section allows easy access to storage cubes; insulated cube is perfect for bottles; multipurpose mesh cube for clothing and snacks; changing pad pocket holds tablets and laptops up to 15″; extra wide dual zip opening; insulated side bottle pockets; elasticized interior pockets and cell phone pocket; cushioned shoulder straps; stroller straps; cushioned changing pad; bpa-free, phthalate-free; size (inches) 16l x 8w x 14h.

Now for inside!

Munchkin Formula Dispenser—I own three of these puppies. Game changers. Both of my kids drank formula and I’m not sure what else I would’ve used to carry around the pre-portioned powder. I forget to fill these up from time to time…

Eddie Bauer Travel Diaper Change Kit—As mentioned before, Oliver still wears a diaper, so I needed a larger changing mat instead of the one that came with all of my diaper bag. This one from Target is great! It’s really a good size, but it fold down easily. Sometimes, when it’s just me and Ollie out and about, I can throw this in my purse with a diaper and some wipes tucked in and I’m good to go.

Logan + Leonara Simple Clutch in ‘Go Spot Go’—I saw this on Instagram and immediately purchased one. I am a clutch/small bag hoarder. I love smaller bags that I can organize my things in and then toss them into my purse or diaper bag. This one is waterproof so I use it for bibs that get messy, gross burp cloths, etc. Recently I’ve been using it to store Piper’s spare set of clothes and socks.

Diapers and wipes—You’d think this is obvious. But I have perpetual “mom brain” and I forget about them all the time.

Food bag (similar)—I found a pouch (see, I told you…) at Old Navy at it’s perfect for carrying around Oliver’s food and snacks. Ours is a bright pink so it’s easy to see, and the inside is smooth coated lining for water-proof storage (in case his applesauce leaks).

Wallet—Since I go back and forth between my purse and diaper bag, I sometimes forget to take my wallet out of one bag and throw it in the other!! Other times, like today, I didn’t feel like bringing my whole wallet (it’s massive FYI), so I just took out my driver’s license, bank card, and a few gift cards, and put them in a small zippered change pouch (I’m not joking. It’s a real addiction).

Suction cup toys—We eat out a lot. And sometimes it’s hard to keep babies entertained. Especially when they’re not old enough to hand over your iPhone so you can finish your Whiskey River BBQ Chicken Wrap at Red Robin in peace. I found this Sassy Wonder Wheel Eye and Hand Coordination Toy at Target and it does the trick. It sticks to the table (it helps if you put a little water down first) and keeps the little ones busy for a little while. Downside is that it’s bulky to carry around in your diaper bag.

And that’s it! Looking over this, it kinda seems like a lot, but trust me, this is a much scaled down version of what I used to bring!!! I hope this helps! Let me know what you keep in your diaper bag 🙂

xx, Christine
